Design Services from Concept to Creation

The design process is fully laid out and fits into specific categories and sequences in each project. Not every project will require us to complete the whole process however; every project will go through these phases to some degree..

Programming

The interior design process begins with discussions to generate or clarify the vision. This involves identifying the specific design and space needs; the use requirements for the space, budget; likes and dislikes and the timing of the work. This is done by simply listening and understanding the vision.

The project begins with a survey, photos, and dimensioning of the interior spaces of the project.Identification of the needs and goals of the project occurs at this point. At this point we will evaluate existing documentation and conditions and assess project resources and limitations. The project schedules will be developed and, coordination with consultants and other specialists will be done as required by the project.

Schematic Design

The next phase is the stage of concepts and ideas. Here the actual designs of the space are formed and agreed upon. This phase includes all the preliminary space planning and furniture arrangements, wall, window, floor, and ceiling treatments; furnishings, fixtures, and millwork; color, finishes, hardware, lighting accessories and art. Issues regarding specialty built-ins, cabinetry and architectural details for interior spaces are reviewed.

Many samples and photos may be shown at this time for a better understanding for the direction the project is headed. Presentation media can include drawings, sketches, perspectives, renderings, color and material boards, photographs, and models, which describe the character, function, and aesthetic of a project.

Design Development

Once the schematic design is agreed upon the next step is to take the concept to the next level of detail. The project is now fine-tuned. Materials, finishes, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment are exactly named with costs manufacturers and all the details that will be required to bring the design into being. Quotes from any contractors are received and a budget is created for the project.This is the stage that will transform the dream into reality. Detailed design drawings are compiled for specific interior features, built in furniture and custom loose furniture items. A collaboration with specialty consultants and licensed practitioners who offer professional services in the technical areas of mechanical, electrical, and load-bearing design as required is also done at this point.

Contract Administration

CED can take on aspects of project management aspects or we can consult with your general contractor. We can handle the ordering and arrival of materials and review and approve shop drawings and samples to assure they are consistent with design concepts; we will conduct on site visits and field inspections; administer contract documents as your agent.

Design Fees

Hourly Rate- These fees are charged for time the CED spends working with you and doing the research necessary to design your project. The hourly rate is inclusive of the designers training; experience; expertise; creativity; network of professional contacts and resources in addition to their time spent scheduling and supervision of sub contractors; deliveries and installations of products. This comes with a guarantee of the quality of the work.

Fixed Rate - In this case CED estimates the amount of time necessary to design and implement your project and quotes a fixed rate for the entire project. A retainer will normally be charged and then a schedule of additional payments will be determined, ending with final payment at completion of the project.

Percentage Above Cost - At CED we have many resources to purchase a vast range of furnishings, fabrics, and accessories. As designers we receive discounts which we will forward to you and we will sell products to you at a percentage above our cost. The percentage will vary per item however, our goal is to get you the best prices for your project.

CED will work out a custom agreement with you depending upon your project. This agreement may combine the above methods and any other items that are unique to your situation.
